The Influence of Celebrities on Society

Do you remember the time when you wanted to be just like one character from a movie you watched? Are you the type of person who looks out for the latest look that stars are wearing so that you can also fashion your hair and garments in the same way? Do you prefer a certain product because it is endorsed by your favourite singer? If the answer to all or at least one of these questions is yes, then you have been influenced by celebrities.

The debate of whether media personalities have a positive or negative effect has been an unending issue for many decades. Some people have argued that famous personas should be good role models on and off screen because society, particularly children, look up to them. That is why, when there are controversies and gossip that spread in magazines and the TV, others react violently towards the “irresponsibility” of these celebrities, because children tend to imitate the actions of these individuals and aspire to be like them. However, not all stars are “bad influences” to the young audience.

Many personalities have shown that they can use their star power for good causes, and others have remained kind and generous even off the screen. They donate to charity, participate in community development projects, and offer their services to relief efforts during natural calamities. There have also been media personas who have used their fame to raise funds for third world countries and pressing social issues. Some have even decided to adopt children from impoverished or war-stricken nations. They are usually the celebrities who have realised the effect they have on the worldwide audience.
